Open Streets Columbia is this Sunday!

Open Spaces is this Sunday, April 2nd on Divine St. from King St. to the Fire House. We will have a bike valet there, as well as some tools to work on bike issues. Come by and check us out! The weather should be perfect!

Here is a map of the event:  OpenStreets-2×3-map_forPrin1

Open Streets initiatives temporarily close a street to automobile traffic so that people may use the street for just about any activity but driving — walking, bicycling, playing, and meeting neighbors.

Open Streets is more than a festival — it’s a street transformation.

Open Streets Columbia is about:

Sustainable Transportation Opportunities.
Supporting a vision of streets that serve all people, no matter if they are traveling on foot, by bike, by transit, or in cars.

Physical Fitness and Wellness. Promoting a healthy lifestyle and physical activity.

Civic Pride. Celebrating the unique character of Columbia and the event’s host neighborhoods – Devine Street, Shandon, and Melrose Heights.

Living Streets. Experiencing the street as a vibrant place for community activity and local business.

By hosting its first Open Streets event, Columbia is joining a global movement. The first Open Streets events, called Ciclovías, were held in Bogotá, Colombia to allow cyclists and pedestrians to enjoy and use public spaces allocated for streets. Hundreds of cities have adopted Open Streets, including neighbors in the Southeastern U.S. Events in Atlanta and Charlotte have grown to road closures of miles with thousands of participants.

Our training day schedule is up!

We are starting the bike maintenance training days back up. Wednesday nights at 7pm we will be going through a bike so you can learn how to fix/adjust/maintain everything on your bike.

The ABCs are the basics- making sure tires are properly inflated, replacing a tube, inspecting and adjusting brakes, inspecting and lubing your chain.

Each following Wednesday, we will focus more closely on a specific element of the bike. Here is the calendar of things to come:

Check out the training nights on our event calendar:

Our Mission

The Cola Town Bike Collective is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable organization of bicycle users whose mission is to educate and empower the community by providing a welcoming space to learn about bicycle repair, engage in maintenance practices, and promote safe operation through outreach and advocacy activities.

We are currently working with various organizations to get free or low cost bikes to individuals in our community that need reliable transportation to get to and from work. Through our partnership we help the underemployed, unemployed, those recovering from substance abuse as well as refugees and immigrants who are relocating to our community.

If you have any questions, or feel we may be able to help you, please feel free to reach out. Our number is (803) 216-5106 and email is colatownbikecollective@gmail.com
